Wasps face La Rochelle, Ulster and Harlequins in the 2017/18 Champions Cup

Wasps have been drawn in Pool 1 of the European Champions Cup, along with La Rochelle, Ulster Rugby and Harlequins.

With the Final to be hosted at the San Mamés Stadium, Bilbao on 12 May 2018, Wasps will face trips to Ireland, France and a shorter journey to Twickenham, in their attempt to qualify for the knockout stages of the competition for the fourth successive season.

Having reached the quarter finals of the competition last year, Wasps know just how tough it is to qualify for the knockout stages.

Next season, as well as facing fellow Premiership club Harlequins, Wasps will take on the French side that finished top of the TOP 14 at the end of the regular 2016/17 season, La Rochelle.

Wasps will also be up against former Wasp Charles Piutau and team mates when they take on Ulster Rugby, who finished fifth in last season’s Pro 12.

Speaking about the draw and the European Challenge ahead of Wasps’ next season, Director of Rugby Dai Young said:

“You don’t get any easy games in Europe,' said Young, 'and you go into the tournament knowing that every game will be a massive test. The draw could have been worse and it could have been better. It doesn’t matter what team you are, it’s a pretty unforgiving tournament. To make it through to the knockout stages you need a bit of luck and you need your best players available for these games.”

HOW THE POOL STAGE FIXTURES WILL BE SCHEDULED

The process of confirming the fixtures for the Champions Cup and Challenge Cup begins after the pool draws.

The pool fixtures are confirmed during the summer, following a scheduling process which includes consultation with the 40 competing clubs, league bodies and broadcast partners across each territory.

EPCR is challenged with producing a balanced and fair schedule which takes into account club preferences, restrictions at many shared stadia, date requests associated with moves to larger venues as well as ensuring our broadcasters across Europe can carry as many compelling matches as possible from Thursday evening through to Sunday.

This means that on certain occasions some clubs will have a slightly longer turnaround than others, but this will usually balance out across a campaign.
